One day recently I set up next to the water to paint this view of the Piscataqua Cafe in Newcastle, NH. I wanted to capture the light on the building and keep it as the focal point. Its always a challenge to stay with the original idea for me because I keep noticing more and more interesting things as I am painting, not to mention the changing conditions when painting outside. In the end I think I accomplished what I set out to do and it was such a great way to spend an afternoon! Lucky!

Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween! My plein air set up at a cemetery in Dover NH. For some reason they had the most brilliantly colored foliage! As you can see from the finished piece, I chose to leave out the headstones, not sure I would want to look at them everyday. Great place to paint though, very quiet, just the sound of the wind blowing the leaves, typical fall day in New England.

Plein Air
Yesterday painted from my mobile studio setup from the back of my jeep. I have the hatch open with an umbrella bungeed to the top for shade and just pull over to the side of the road when the inspiration hits. I have painted here in York, Maine, many times this summer. I was making it a mission to study water and reflections. Its a tough job but somebody has to do it!

Girl In The Green Gown
Girl In The Green Gown
6x6 oil 175.
This was another painting of the model from my Tuesday group at the studio. It is so helpful to be able to do these small painting from life and to be able to study the skin tone and postures. Occasionally I will do a larger one in the studio from these studies and reference photos.

Painting the model
Tamara
6x6 oil 175.
I have been working on small panels, 6x6 inches in anticipation of an upcoming show at the Randy Higbee Gallery in CA. There was a limited number to submit and this was one I chose to keep out of that show. I have been painting this model, Tamara, for the last several weeks and have a few paintings
I will put on here including the one that got into that show. Usually I would work on one small like this one and a large one which I would finish up after the session in my studio. It was interesting to work on it after she had left, just from memory and trying to just make a good painting rather than a total likeness of the model.

Not so small work
The Butcher and His Apprentice
11x14 oil 900.
This painting is being published in the April edition of American Art Collector Magazine. I thought I would just put it out there in case anyone cares to check it out. I have recently finished another larger painting of an interior bar scene which I will post here soon also.

Waiting
8 x10 oil
200.
This painting was done from a series I had done of people shopping. This particular guy was in Milan outside one of the shops, waiting calmly while the dog was a little more anxious. I tried to capture the contrast in their postures as well as the wonderful colors of that scene.

Stop In The Name of Love
6x6 oil 100.
This is the revised edition of the photo of this painting which has a lot more blue in it and is truer to the actual color than the photo I had previously posted here. Maybe I should have retitled it as - Love Is Blind!

The Couples Series
Kisses
6x6 oil 150.
I tried to publish this one for Valentine's Day but somehow it didn't show up yesterday. I was trying to stretch my imagination for different types of subjects for the couple series. This one came easily since the candy was right there in front of me. I liked the glow that the silver one took on from being next to the red. Reminded me of a blush.

Another Couple
Stop In The Name Of Love
6x6 oil 150.
Another small painting from the couple series. The color on this piece is showing as a little more sepia in it than there actually is in this photo. The original piece has more blues in the shadows and background. I will post it again after I tweak it on i photo. Fun subject to paint!

Shopper Series 1
5x7 oil
175.
I love to work in series as far as subject matter goes, especially figurative paintings. This is one from about a month ago when I was working on a shopper series. I was in Boston on Newbury Street one Saturday concentrating on the postures of the shoppers walking by. I have an endless supply of subjects
to paint. More later.

Amore
Amore Firenze
6x6 oil

Another of the "couple" series. While I was traveling in Italy I was taking lots of photos for future paintings. I took a lot of shots of couples with this series in mind. This couple I spotted while in front of the Duomo of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore at he Piazza del Duomo in Florence. Such a romantic place!

Valentine's Day
The Kiss
6x6 oil 200.
In trying to decide what to paint, I often start with one idea which turns into a series, in this case I thought I would start by doing paintings of couples for a the next several weeks, maybe longer. At least through Valentine's Day. I love painting figure so we'll see where it takes me!

Sunny
Sunny
4x6 oil
175.
This is another of the paintings done from my painting trip to Tuscany. The model was seated in front of the villa on the old stone steps. It was a challenge to get her to look like she was seated on them, without describing each individual step, instead using the folds in her skirt and the position of her feet.

Onion
Onion Glow
5x5 oil
150.
I set this up in front of the window to paint a while ago and it had a wonderful glow of light coming through the skin. The onions are very agreeable to work with as they will pose for a long time without wilting or fading or going bad. Besides they have great skin!

Siamese Cats
Siamese In The Sun
4x6 oil
175.
For Information on purchasing this piece email me @ksmbythesea@aol.com
This painting was inspired by a recent painting trip to Italy. I stayed for a week at a farm/villa where there were a pair of Siamese cats among the many cats in the area whose job it was to control the mice I suspect. I thought they were so beautiful and graceful looking that I had to paint them.

Monhegan Truck
This painting titled "Monhegan Pickup" has been published in the book Island Light Monhegan Island published by Blue Tree publishing company in Portsmouth NH. I have spent many wonderful times painting on Monhegan Island, Maine, where there are no cars and the only vehicles are a few old beat up pickup trucks which show up at the docks when the ferry comes in to shuttle guests bags and food supplies to the island store and the various places where people stay. These trucks have a lot of character and add to the charm of the island!
